WeChat online visual language among Chinese Gen Z: virtual gift, aesthetic identity, and affection language

Introduction As a relatively new and innovative form of digital communication visual image, emojis, emoticons, stickers are appreciated, yet criticised. Young people on social media have lost the traditional etiquette interpersonal networking skills, which is challenge in itself. This study provides better understanding how young engage behave diverse contexts while utilising language. Methods contributes to anthography studies, by conducting this through interviews with 10 Generation Z from urban China 2-month-long participatory observation three WeChat group chats. Results By examining use language relationships their elders or superiors, equivalent peers intimate lovers friends, found that emoticons become virtual gifts, aesthetic identities affection Z. Discussion contends languages do not alter human nature ethical standards but rather provide avenues for expression empower affective communication. Although core still being passed absorbed, its has changed.
